When it comes to fitness, there are certain bad habits which are responsible for making you lose weight and there are certain habits which cause you to gain weight. Have you ever wondered why certain people are in extremely good shape? It is because they have formed healthy habits and stick to them every day. Here we are going to discuss nine habits which are responsible for making you gain weight that you should try and avoid.
Bad Habit #1: Watching Too Much Television
99% of people who are out of shape are guilty of this. Research has shown that people
who watch about two hours of television per day are much more likely to gain weight than people who only watch it for half an hour. Watching television often leads to overeating and since there really isn’t anything else to do. Also, watching television often means that you’ll be motionless for a large portion of the time. This results in a decreased metabolic rate as well as heart rate and blood pressure.
Bad Habit #2: Eating Too Fast
This is a habit which seems to be becoming more widespread in our newly fast-paced society. Here is why eating too fast can cause you to gain weight. Our brains take about twenty minutes to signal our body that we are full. The only problem is that during those twenty minutes, people tend to eat more than they should and don’t feel full until later. As a result, they gain much more weight.
Bad Habit #3: Snacking While Tasking
People tend to eat while performing a multitude of activities. For example, most people eat while they are driving, playing on the computer, talking on the phone, or watching television. And since most of these tasks are contribute to a large portion of our day, eating throughout all of them can result in some serious weight gain.
Bad Habit #4: Fast Food Cravings
If you actually took the time to connect the dots, you would come to realize that most people who are overweight are also very avid fast food eaters. Some people work too late to make it home for dinner so they end up purchasing food while on the go. The only problem is that most of this food is very unhealthy and contributes to a lot of weight gain.
Bad Habit #5: Eating to Repress Feelings
Some people drink when they are sad. Others like to go for long walks. However, it seems like the majority of people in our society are using food as a way to help repress their emotional problems. Since they use food to feel good, they ignore the “I’m hungry” signal coming from the brain and replace it with a “I’m sad” signal. Think about it: how many times have you mindlessly snacked on something while you were feeling very stressed?
Bad Habit #6: “Too Busy”
While most people live very hectic lives, this is no excuse for why you aren’t in shape. Studies have shown that individuals who say they don’t have enough time to exercise usually do but opt to use their time to do something different (like watch television).
Bad Habit #7: Unsupportive Friends
In some cases, people who eat a lot can cause the people around them to eat a lot as well. This is why it is important to cultivate a social circle of people who are health conscious and make proper dieting their number one priority.
Bad Habit #8: Lack of Sleep
Sleep deprivation causes people to gain weight because it boosts a hormone in your body which is responsible for appetite. It is recommended that you get at least eight hours of sleep every night to defer the stimulation of this hormone. Failing to do so can result in up to 3% more body fat over the course of a few months.
Bad Habit #9: Not Counting Calories
The majority of people have no clue what they are eating. They don’t understand the fat value for their meals and they definitely don’t count calories. This can lead to a significant increase in weight gain because that individual isn’t spending time counting the calories they are consuming.
