Getting fit is a lifelong challenge, just like house-keeping. You can’t just reach your fitness goals, declare victory, and do nothing else. Much of the challenge is in the upkeep. Fortunately there are lots of ways to make this a lot less of a chore.
Walk whenever you can. If you could incorporate walking to at least a few parts of your commute, you’re off to a good start. Also try walking over to your officemates to discuss things with them, instead of sending them an IM. Try to see if you could walk to the grocery or if you could park your car a bit further away. It all adds up without your realizing it.
Avoid sitting whenever possible. If your situation allows, try a standing desk. Studies have shown that the very act of sitting continuously for long periods actually lowers your life expectancy. A high desk with a bar stool is also a good alternative to a standing desk. Generally speaking, you should alternate between standing, sitting, and pacing. Thanks to handheld tablet computers, getting work done while pacing is so much easier.
Challenge yourself to make healthy food that tastes good. There’s a reason so many of us go back to fast food after a brief flirtation with healthy eating. It’s not easy to quickly prepare healthy, good-tasting food. But it’s been done, and the envelope has not even been pushed all the way. The internet is an awesome resource full of thousands of great recipes so you won’t need to ever eat unhealthily again- if you put your mind to it.
Get a physically challenging hobby. It doesn’t have to be running marathons, alligator wrestling, or anything too strenuous. Even something that seems as mild as golf or bird-watching can be a great way to stay active. The key is to find a hobby that doesn’t involve too much sitting around- unless your arms will do a lot of moving, like drumming or kayaking. Even playing musical instruments can help you stay in shape, provided you don’t sit all the time.
Do regular house-keeping. If I mentioned house-keeping earlier in my analogy, it’s
because I was busting my backside scrubbing floors earlier- and let me tell you: it was pretty tiring. Cleaning your house isn’t just a great way to make your mom proud (or keep her from judging your awful, awful life decisions) when she comes visit, it’s a way to keep fit and to strengthen your resolve to keep to a regimen, and will keep you from staying in one spot for too long.
Travel for fitness. If you can, try to rough it and pack as many fun physical activities as you can when travelling. Try not to be too busy though, as you might miss the whole point of being there!
Think of the sex! Physically fit people tend to have much better sex lives for obvious reasons. Not only can they do more, they could do it for much longer. Isn’t that motivation enough? Also, if you are in the market for this sort of thing, being fit will make you tremendously more attractive to the opposite sex. If you’re broke and don’t have an interesting personality, then you have very little recourse but to get physically fitter if you want to compete.
